Software Tester

Status:  Full-Time
Posted:  Not Currently Available

Position Summary:

As a software tester you will be working with our software development team to write test plans, test our software, and provide detailed defect reports so we can improve the quality of our software. You will directly impact the growth of the company by enhancing the quality of our product and ensuring that each software release works as expected.

Software testing does not require a technical background instead testing requires smart people that are detail-oriented, enjoy finding and solving problems and enjoy making a better product. Testers are not programmers in fact more than half the testers we surveyed were not technical at all (science grad, English major, geography grad, general admin, and writer/editor).

Responsibilities
  • Writing test plans, which are detailed checklists of steps required to test specific functionality within our software, specifically how the application should work and should not work.
  • Verifying that our software does what it is supposed to do and that it behaves as expected by following our test plans and sweating the details looking for big problems, like page crashes, as well as smaller problems, like the spacing is off.
  • Providing clearly worded steps to reproduce defects found during testing so that the software development team can isolate it, fix it, and return it back for verification.
  • Learning the ins and outs of our software in an effort to break it (before our customers do) and also so you can provide feedback on changes that could be made to make the software better.
Skills & Qualifications
  • You have a good grasp of common sense and aren't afraid to use it.
  • You get satisfaction from finding quirks, inconsistencies and bugs in software and then further satisfaction from trying to figure out why (and bonus marks if you can figure out how to fix it too).
  • You obsess about the details, the wrong font, colour, or wording drives you insane and you need to tell someone about it.
  • You are able to create clear step-by-step instructions.
  • You are adventurous and not afraid to do what you aren't supposed to do -- good testers do all of the things that others wouldn't think of doing in order to make the software better and easier to use.
  • You aren't afraid to ask questions, even about the most obvious things, because what is not obvious to you is probably not obvious to others too.
  • You are comfortable using a computer and computer software – we don't mean writing software, we mean using email, web browsers and other common business software.
What is it like to work at our software company?

It's a relaxed professional environment (jeans, not suits) where we work with our customers improve their businesses using our software and services. You will be working with other smart people that enjoy solving technical problems, taking abstract concepts and creating software from them – software that other people use to run their companies.

What do testers not do?
  • Testers do not program – you can if you want to, but testers are not expected to, nor do we feel that programmers are good at testing software – if they were good at testing then we wouldn't need testers.
  • Testers do not need to be technical – it doesn't hurt but it doesn't help either, in fact none of our clients are technical folks, that's why they hire us, so having non-technical testers means that you might find things that we didn't think of (because we are technical folks) and that's the major reason for testing!

We're building the best software by hiring the best people. If you are the best, come join us and be part of the team, here's how:

  • Meet or exceed the qualifications above.
  • Email your resume to: jobs@xmodus.com and indicate the job title in the subject area of your email.

Please do not:

  • call our office asking for more information, if you require more information then please email jobs@xmodus.com, or
  • drop by our office to ask questions, though you are welcome to drop your resume off if you wish, or
  • expect to hear from us unless you are selected for an interview.
